Position description 

The Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is undertaking a call for applications for a full-time position as a member of the Contract Academic Staff Member (CAS) at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (Clinical). The professorial rank will be according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a three-year, renewable appointment and does not confer eligibility for tenure. The incumbent will also serve as the Director of the Alan Edwards Pain Management Unit (AEPMU). The AEPMU is a world leader in pain management and recognized for its excellence in pain education and research. The incumbent will also be recommended to be the holder of the Alan Edwards Chair in Clinical Pain.

The successful applicant will be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (teaching, supervision of graduate students, and involvement in academic and administrative committees), provide excellent clinical teaching and supervision to residents and medical students, and to pursue scholarly activities in advancing clinical care or clinical research. 

 

Job Duties 

The primary responsibilities of the incumbent as the Director of the AEPMU are as follows: 

Administration: 

  • Overseeing the multidisciplinary clinical activities in the unit. 
  • Ensuring the sustainability of resource allocation to the AEPMU. 
  • Working closely with the University leadership and the MUHC administration, McGill Integrated University Health, Social Services Network Office (RUISSS), and members of the Ministry of Health and Social Services involved in the chronic pain dossier in the province of Quebec. 

 

Education: 

  • Overseeing the educational program in clinical pain management and updating the pain management content in the undergraduate medical curriculum. 
  • Providing pain education across the four years of undergraduate medical education. 
  • Enhancing the Continuing Medical Education activities related to chronic pain. 
  • Collaborate with McGill’s Department of Family Medicine to enhance teaching in Pain Medicine within its core residency program as well as the Department’s Enhanced Skills third year programs. 

 

Research: 

  • Promoting research activities conducted by clinicians from the AEPMU and leading the recruitment of clinical research fellows. 

 

  • Ensuring collaborations with the McGill’s Alan Edwards Centre for Research on Pain (AECRP). 
  • Participating in clinical research activities at the AEPMU and maintaining an active record of peer- reviewed publications.

Qualifications and Education Requirements 

  • Candidates must hold an MD degree and be eligible for licensure in Quebec and certification by the Collège des médecins du Québec and possess a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons accredited Fellowship, or equivalent. 
  • Research training in Pain management is preferred. 
  • Recognized excellence as an educator, clinician, and researcher. 
  • Candidates should demonstrate superior communication and management skills. A track record of successful collaborations as well as the ability to maintain positive working relationships are required. Previous experience in a major administrative role is also desirable. 
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families and health care professionals.
